Case Study: 4-Year-Old Male Golden Retriever Undergoes Urethrostomy Surgery After Five Episodes of Urethral Obstruction
After a 4-year-old male Golden Retriever experienced five episodes of urethral obstruction requiring unblocking, the owner decided to proceed with a perineal urethrostomy (PU) surgery to permanently prevent future obstructions.
For male cats with recurrent urethral obstructions due to feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), a perineal urethrostomy (PU) surgery is often recommended.
Due to the high cost of repeated unblocking procedures and the increased risk of infection and kidney damage with each episode, the owner ultimately consented to the surgery.
Surgical Method: The procedure involved a standard perineal urethrostomy surgery, which entails removing the narrow penile urethra segment and creating a new opening for the wider pelvic urethra at the perineal area to reduce the risk of future obstructions.
